VR-Hut: The virtual reality arcade attracts gamers of all ages in Waterloo
The new venue in Waterloo that’s drawing in gamers is VR-Hut. Just imagine: you step into an elevator that takes you to the top floor of a massive building. Suddenly, you find yourself standing on a wooden plank, and beneath your feet is nothing but empty space… Dozens of floors separate you from the ground. Yet you have to reach that phone, which is ringing incessantly at the far end of that unstable plank. You can guess what happens next: the plank eventually breaks, and you plunge into the void.
Here’s a taste of what VR-Hut, the new virtual reality center in Waterloo, has to offer. In fact, from the very first minutes at the center—located on Chaussée de Louvain, across from the Carrefour de Mont-Saint-Jean—it’s clear that you’re in for a good dose of thrills and fun.
What’s more, the games live up to expectations. Whether we were in the middle of an Arizona desert, surrounded by zombies, each one scarier than the last, or armed with a bow and arrows and under fire from our teammates, we were completely immersed in every world we got to try out.
Variety in Games
However, VR-Hut isn’t just about shooting games. In fact, the center offers about 20 games from a catalog of 800. These include the very popular escape room games and a virtual climb up Mount Everest. Plus, if you request it in advance of your visit, they can provide a game of your choice. So there’s something for everyone.
“We have a very diverse audience. In fact, it ranges from groups of friends to team-building events. We might host a birthday party for a 10-year-old just as easily as one for 40-year-old men. We’ve struck a great balance where people of all ages have a blast—gamers and beginners alike,” says Arnaud Percy, co-founder of VR-Hut.
Since opening in October, the center and its five rooms have been constantly busy, despite the presence of The Vex, another virtual reality venue in Louvain-la-Neuve. “There isn’t really any competition with the other venues,” the manager continues. “Our competitors are more like go-karting, bowling, and the movies—all those leisure activities that come to mind automatically when people want to have fun. But that’s changing. The more virtual reality venues there are, the more it becomes second nature for people to say, ‘Let’s go play a round of VR.’”
